Accra, Feb. 8, GNA - Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the
paralympic version of the 2019 All Africa Games (AAG), will be detached from
the main games.
This year, the AAG fixed for Morocco, would be without the paralympic version, as that has been shifted to 2020 and would be organised as a separate event in Morocco, according to information gathered by the GNA Sports.
The new format, would put the All Africa Paralympic Games into the same category, as the main paralympic games, which is organised separately from the Olympic Games.
According to the information, the new format, was mooted by the Africa Paralympic Committee (APC) and has been endorsed by the paralympic movement.
It will enable the participation of more para athletes in the competition, as compared to the previous years, when it was tied to the AAG, which limits the number of participants.
Mr. Wilson Yao Agbesi, Treasurer of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), confirmed this to the GNA Sports in an interview.
He said the decision was the best piece of news to have happened to the paralympic family in Africa, this year.
"This more like an independence for the para family in Ghana and Africa. Henceforth, we would have control over the number of athletes to compete and that would even boost our chances of having more medals in international competitions," he added.
