Kumasi, June 12, GNA – MTN Ghana has launched in Kumasi, a comprehensive programme to mark 10 years of mobile money (MoMo) services in Ghana, with a call on customers to be wary of fraudsters that have penetrated the market in recent times.
Mr Abdul Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Commercial, Mobile Money, said the celebration would be occasioned by two major highlights that comprised; robust efforts to tackle fraudster invasion, which had been one of the major threats to their operations.
The other highlight would also feature a three month programme to reward customers with the highest transition points within a three-month period, starting from this month, he said.
Mr Rufai was speaking at a ceremony to launch the anniversary in Kumasi.
Throwing more light on plans to crack down on fraudsters, he said the communication giant was partnering the Ghana Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to build a forensic laboratory which would ensure that the miscreants are busted, to curtail the canker.
He hinted that MTN was also trying to co-opt more “MOMO” merchants to help digitise markets and shop outlets, in a bid to promote cashless customer services.
“This would help save customers the inconvenience of carrying too much cash on them, which is even becoming risky”, he added
The Senior Commercial Manager affirmed MTN’s resolve to continue to educate and empower customers to become aware of these fraudulent acts
On the reward scheme, he said MTN was giving away ten cars in a spate of three months- starting from this month (June) to August.
Other prizes included; television sets and GHC 3,000.00 cash for the top 1,000 customers.
“Customers with the highest points in terms of transactions will be rewarded and every transaction attracted some points”.
Mr Rufai confirmed that the only valid number the telecommunication company used to contact customers was; 0244300000 adding, “There is no way MTN will call you to give away some money before you win anything.
He said the “MoMo” service which was launched in 2009, started with less than 100,000 customers, but has made long strides since it can now boast of more than 14,000,000 customers.
