Accra, Oct. 9, GNA – The Ghana Highway Authority, in collaboration with Eris Property Group (Eris), an integrated property development group, and Momentum Africa Real Estate Fund, on Tuesday outlined measures to address flooding on portions of the Walker-Bush Highway in Accra.
The entities have started preparatory works, which involved drainage expansion; digging and the replacement of the 0.6 millimetre culvert with a 0.9 millimetre.
They have attributed the perennial flooding on portions of the Highway, especially between the Tetteh Quarshie interchange and Dzorwulu Traffic Light, to the narrow drains that are unable to facilitate the flow of high volumes of water.
Briefing the media in Accra, Mr Lawrence Lloyd Lamptey, the Greater Accra Regional Director, Ghana Highway Authority, explained that the rapid urbanisation of the area had led to excess water run-off due to floor paving.
“The size of the drainage has now become smaller to contain and facilitate the water flow so we have redesigned to expand it to be able to contain the water from the catchment area,” he said.
Mr Lamptey said the outer layby in front of the Shell Filling Station near the Dzorwulu Traffic Light would be blocked from October 14 to 21,2018 to make way for digging activities.
Regarding the expansion work, he said the Government was providing technical support to address the problem and appealed to other organisations to partner it in that venture.
Mr Enoch Entsua-Mensah, the ERIS Chief Executive Officer, disclosed that the company, in partnership with Momentum African, had made available over GH¢400,000.00 for the project.
The support, he noted, was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility towards relieving the ordeal commuters went through on that stretch of the road when it rained.
“It does not necessarily affect the companies premises but as a company, we believe government cannot do it alone, companies and individuals need to step forward and take up initiatives such as this,” Mr Entsua-Mensah added.
