ťIt is a historic moment for us today. This is the first time in over 120 years that we are seeing the first king,Ł Harry van Dijk, Deputy Head of Mission Kingdom of the Netherlands told journalists on Tuesday.
Queen Beatrix handed over power after 33 years on the throne as the country's monarch. The transfer became official as she signed the "instrument of abdication" which means she will now be known as Princess Beatrix.
Mr Harry van Dijk said the national holiday which used to be called the QueenÖs Day, would now be known as the KingÖs Day and beginning in 2014 the day would be celebrated on 27 April, the birthday of King Willem-Alexander.
He said "the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, meaning that the position of the monarch is laid down in the Constitution. The Constitution spells the role of the monarch and the ministers who together constitute the government".
Mr van Dijk said since 1848, it has been the ministers and not the monarch who is politically responsible for what the monarch said and did.
ťIn the Netherlands, the monarch plays no part in politics. While he or she signs all Acts of Parliament and Royal Decrees, these are co-signed by the minister responsible. Ministers and state secretaries are appointed by Royal Decree and sworn in by the monarch,Ł he said.GNA
