Effiduase (Ash), March 13, GNA - Mr. Michael Boahene, Acting District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Sekyere East has asked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to prioritize community engagement and effective stakeholder consultations for implementation of projects.
He said prior knowledge of the needs of community members and their involvement in the development and execution of the project would not only illicit their maximum support but total community ownership of such projects.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Effiduase, Mr Boahene pointed out that some communities have rejected infrastructural projects due mainly to lack of consultation with community members by the implementing agencies, especially on the type of the project or where it had been sited.
He said many market centres, toilet facilities, boreholes, health centres among many other projects, had been left to rot because the people in the communities have refused to patronize them.
Mr. Boahene said NGOs, civil societies and foreign development partners have understood this principle and had always sat down and discuss with community members before they implemented any project.
This according to him had met the needs and expectations of communities who saw those project as their own and thereby, showed keen interest and use them.
Mr. Boahene said proper stakeholder consultations do not only lead to community ownership of development projects but also lead to efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of such national resources.
He called on MMDAs to always involve community members in decision making in local governance in order to bridge the gap between them and the local people.
Mr. Boahene also called on the unit committees, assembly members and chiefs to prioritize their development needs, develop community action plans and have strategic means of persuading their MMDAs to consider their priorities in the development of social and other projects for their communities.GNA
