Sekondi, July 12, GNA - The Department of Social Welfare of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has presented various items to Persons With Disabilities (PWD's).
To a total of 37 Persons With Disability, the Department presented various items including fufu pounding machines, sewing machines, deep freezers, cartons of bottled water, and helped others establish their shops.
Mr John Buckman, the Presiding member for STMA, addressing the beneficiaries, said government has resorted to providing support to PWD's in the form of various materials instead of cash because some of the beneficiaries use the money for other means rather than the intended purpose of the fund.
Mr Anthony K. K. Sam, Metropolitan Chief Executive of STMA, who made the presentation, said the government has allocated a percentage of money for PWD's in the District Assembly Common Fund and that was what has been used for the purchase of the items.
He said a total of GH¢52,207.50 was used in acquiring the needed items and shops for the PWDs.
Mr K. K. Sam said the presentation was being done in batches according to the list of names of PWDs recorded at the assembly and a person cannot benefit more than once from the programme.
The PWD's together with their families expressed gratitude to the government for having them in mind and extended such great help to them as this was going to improve upon their finances and make them self-sufficient.
