Accra, Dec. 31, GNA - Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, National Chief Imam has called on the Police to arrest the gang of Muslim Youth who raided the premises of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at Kaneshie in Accra on December 25.
The gang attacked the office to release seven stray cattle impounded by AMA Task Force at the Obetsebi Lamptey Circle, causing nuisance to drivers and pedestrians.
Sheikh Sharabutu expressed surprise why Muslim Youth were behind such deviant act, when dialogue could have resolved the issue amicably.
úThis attitude goes a long way to destroy the good image of the nation, which sometimes ends up in the destruction of State property,Ě he said.
Sheikh Sharabutu made the call when Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, Director of Public Health of AMA, paid a courtesy call on him to complain to him about the attack on the Waste Management Department Yard of the Assembly.
Dr Boateng said he was in his office on December 24, when the gang suspected to have come from Sabon Zongo in Accra raided the office and asked for the release of the animals, saying they were acting on the orders of the Chief Imam.
úI visited the Chief Imam to report the issue to him because the gang said the animals belonged to him. I asked them to bring a written note from the Chief Imamôs office to decide what to do, but instead they left and returned on December 25 to forcibly take the animals away.Ě
He said the youth were annoyed when they were told that each of the animals was attracting a fine of GH¬Ę200.00.
Dr Boateng said rearing of animals in the Metropolis was a violation of AMA bye-laws banning the practice due to the environmental health problems it causes.
Mr Moses Amoonaquah, Caretaker of the AMA Kraal said the angry youth numbering 20 and wielding cutlasses and knives charged into the yard, destroyed the kraal and attacked everyone on sight.
