Koforidua, Jan. 13, GNA - The Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAkDeF), the Charity wing of the Newmont Akyem Mine has awarded 1,720 scholarships to students in the Birim North District in communities affected by the mines.
The scholarship beneficiaries are in tertiary, vocational and Senior High Schools.
Mr Joep Coenen, General Manager of Newmont Akyem Mine disclosed this at the end of year media soiree for media personnel in the Eastern Region at Koforidua.
He said NAkDeF had recently launched a partnership programme with GIZ, a German Development Agency for the construction of a vocational institute at Akyem Amanfrom for the training of the people in employable technical skills for their economic empowerment.
Mr Coenen said NAkDeF was also working towards the establishment of the Cooperative Credit Union to enable the people in the mining communities to get access to start-up capital for their businesses and funding for the local businesses.
He said 2017 was a successful year for the company as it won many awards for their performance and the mine won the first position in the Ghana Club One hundred award, won the best performing in environmental management at the Ghana Mining Industry award and the communication faction of the company won the best Public Relation(PR) organization of the year, extractive sector at the National PR and Communication Excellence Award.
The General Manager expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders of the company including the media for the support given them.
