Tema, Sept. 15 GNA - The driver of an Opel Cadet Salon car was on Wednesday burnt beyond recognition after an articulated truck crashed into it at Tema.
Chief Superintendent Joseph Owusu-Bempah, Tema Regional Commander, Motor Transport and Traffic Department, Ghana Police Service, told the Ghana News Agency that would be difficult to identify the man who was driving the car with registration number GT-4210-U.
The mortal remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Tema General Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.
Chief Supt Owusu-Bempah stated that, information gathered from some eye witnesses indicated that at about 18:45 hours on Wednesday, 32- years-old Daniel Wayo who was the driver’s mate of a Duff 40-footer articulated truck with registration number GT8586-13, was seen fidgeting with his mobile phone while driving the truck.
He added that the truck which was carrying a container veered off its lane, crashed into the Opel Kadet, and dragged it for some meters into an open drain after which the truck with its load fell on it killing the driver instantly while the car went up in flames.
The MTTD Commander noted that, Wayo fled from the scene upon seeing the car burning and had since not been seen.
He said his outfit was seriously searching for him stating however that the substantive driver of the truck was in police custody assisting in investigation.
He cautioned drivers against handing over their vehicles to mates and unqualified persons.
