Koforidua, Jan 02, GNA - The Koforidua Circuit Court ‘B’, presided over by Ms. Mercy Kotei, has ordered five suspected illegal miners, caught digging for gold in the Atiwa Range Forest Reserve to be held in police custody.
They are Awudu Annia, Isaac Yeboah, Abubakar Adam, Mustapha Seidu and Isahaku Yakubu.
Their pleas were not taken and they would make their next appearance on Friday, January 12.
The accused were arrested on Boxing Day in the Reserve at Kubreso near Akateng in the West Akim District by the Taskforce set up in the Eastern Region to check illegal mining.
Members of the taskforce were on routine patrol, when they found the five men busily digging for gold right inside the reserve in defiance of the government’s ban on illegal mining.
