Tamale, Sept 11, GNA - A project to create awareness on local governance participation among community members to ensure rapid and sustainable development has been launched.
The three-year project dubbed "Community Participation in Local Governance" will develop strategies for active involvement of the citizenry in local governance in the targeted Districts, which include; Kpandai and East Gonja, and Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.
It is being implemented by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tamale with support from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation.
Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, who launched the project in Tamale on Tuesday, emphasised the need for all to actively partake in the governance process in their communities for sustainable development.
Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister lauded the project saying it was in line with government's commitment to deepen decentralisation to ensure that local governments responded to the needs of their people.
He commended the Catholic Church for its contribution to the development of the region and the country as a whole assuring it of government's continued partnership for the progress of society.
Sagnari-Naa Yakubu Abdulai, Paramount Chief of Sagnarigu Traditional Area, whose speech was read on his behalf, said citizen's participation in local governance enhanced service delivery and development of communities.
He therefore, lauded the project expressing hope that it would empower citizens to demand accountability from duty-bearers.
Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who chaired the launch, urged politicians to be candid and tell their supporters the truth such that they would not be misled to undertake negative acts.
Revered Father Clement Kwasi Adjei, Director, Governance, Justice and Peace Directorate of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tamale called for the support of all stakeholders especially NCCE, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, chiefs, assemblies amongst others to ensure success of the project.GNA
