Sunyani, Aug. 31, GNA – Ms Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), on Friday stressed the need to establish Information Communication and Technology (ICT) units in basic and Senior High Schools (SHS) to facilitate the study of ICT.
She said the government was prepared to furnish these units with lap top computers to facilitate and enhance the study of science and technology.
Ms Ayittey made the call when presenting 250 lap top computers to 10 SHS and some basic schools in the Sunyani Municipality.
Each of the beneficiary SHS, Sunyani Senior High, Odumaseman Senior High, Notre Damme Senior High and Saint James Seminary and Senior High School received 25 of the computers.
The basic schools were Abesim Seventh Day Adventist Primary and Junior High, Sunyani Methodist ‘A’ and Sunyani Methodist ‘B’ Primary and Junior High, Ridge Experimental ‘A’ and Ridge Experimental ‘B’ Primary and Junior High and Nyamaah Primary and Junior High schools.
Ms Ayittey said the government was investing 45% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in education to push Ghana into middle income status.
She said quality education and the study of ICT played a cardinal role in Ghana’s reconstruction processes therefore, the government would continue to invest resources in that direction.
Mr Felix Chaahaah, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Director, expressed appreciation to the management of rlg Communications which assembled the computers and advised teachers of the beneficiary schools to always contact the company whenever the computers developed any fault.
Dr George Adjei-Hinneh, the Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, thanked the government for the efforts made so far in the promotion of ICT in schools.
He said most public schools in the Region had benefited from the project and expressed optimism that the gesture would be extended to more schools especially those in deprived communities.
Dr Adjei-Hinneh advised teachers to always guide the students and ensure that they used the computers for academic purposes.
