Accra, Oct. 24, GNA - Mr Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations' Secretary General, at the weekend, said global attention would be on the world body to seal up a comprehensive deal on climate change, in December at Copenhagen.
The United Nations Climate Change Summit is a major event in the worldwide effort to deal with the problem of global warming, which scientists say is accelerated by human activity.
Leaders from the nations are expected to go to the conference with the goal of reaching an agreement on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which contributes to the warming of the planet.
In a speech read on his behalf at a flag raising ceremony to mark the 64th Anniversary of the UN in Accra, Mr Moon said the food, fuel, financial and flu crisis hitting the world showed that nations were closely knitted and shared the same problems and stressed on the need to unite to solve the world's problems.
Mr Moon called for the redoubling of efforts to make the world a safer and better place.
The UN came into force On October 24, 1945, when the five permanent members of the Security Council ratified the charter drawn up earlier that year.
The members were: France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Since 1948, the event's anniversary has been known as United Nations Day. It is an occasion to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the United Nations and its family of specialised agencies.
