TUC trains women for leadership positions.

Cape Coast, July 20, GNA - The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) in collaboration with "Realizing Rights", a human rights organization based in the United States is organizing a two-day residential workshop for working women in the Central Region, in Cape Coast.

    

The workshop is being attended by 25 women from the various districts of the Region and it's aimed at deepening their knowledge and understanding on gender issues as well as encouraging women activists to take up leadership roles in the decision-making process, among others.

    

The Managing Director of "Realizing Rights", Madam Heather Grady who opened the workshop on Tuesday said 300 women nationwide, had so far benefited from the workshop and that, the Volta Region, the last region left, would have its turn next week.

    

She commended the participants for responding enthusiastically and that Ghana and Liberia are the only African countries benefiting from the workshop, which focuses on women's empowerment.

    

She said even though the organization ends its project in December this year, she hopes beneficiaries of the workshop will take up the mantel to spread and educate their fellow women on what they have learnt at their workplaces and in their communities.

    

The Head of the Organizations Department of the TUC, Togbe Adom Drayi II described the workshop as an "important milestone in the capacity building of women" and expressed gratitude to the organization for its support.

    

He reiterated calls to women to let the opportunity being offered them serve as catalysts to foster development and to change their lifestyles for the better.      

    

The Head of Women's desk of the TUC, Ms. Teresa Abuga said the TUC, which adopted a gender policy in 1996 seeks to address gender imbalance in its activities through sensitization workshops and educational campaigns.

    

She said the TUC/ University of Cape Coast partnership Certificates in Labour Studies would be awarded participants after the workshop, explaining that, the certificate would facilitate the furtherance of their academic pursuit.

    

Topics including "psychology of human learning", "labour relations in Ghana", "organizing skills", "gender equality", "basic rights", "workers' and women's participation" as well as leadership and leadership styles will be treated.
