Koforidua, GNA - The Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says the company is being hurt as a result of the procurement law, which it claims some persons are taking advantage of to supply the utility provider with "sub-standard equipment."
According to the SSA, ECG is experiencing a higher rate of failure of materials and equipment resulting in a "negative effect on the operations" and therefore calls for a re-look at the policy.
It says although it appreciates government's policy on procurement of materials by public corporate entities, it is of the "opinion that the practice is not in the best interest of ECG."
Mr Twum Barima Boadu, National President of the SSA, in a speech at Koforidua on Thursday, claims that sub-standard equipment are being supplied the company under the guise of competitive bidding.
"The purchase of sub-standard equipment in the name of competitive bidding under the Procurement Act is having a negative effect on our operations", he said, adding that the "rate of failure of equipment is unacceptable", as the "situation cast a lot of slur on the integrity and image of the company."
Mr Boadu said the public's trust in the ability of ECG to "deliver efficient service is dwindling due to the frequent failure" of equipment.
The SSA President said the association was also demanding a standardization of ECG's operations as in the case of pre-payment metering systems because customers were complaining about the quality of the meters and the company needed not "turn deaf ears to their cries."
The ECG, he said, currently uses five prepayment metering systems, whereas the association wanted the company to settle on one workable system to bring about efficiency.
