United States lauds Ghana's democracy

Accra, Aug. 30, GNA - The United States (U.S.) has commended Ghana™s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the 2012 presidential election dispute through legal process.

śWe respect Ghana™s judicial process and the transparency of the court's proceedings, which were broadcast live and in full on television and radio."

This was contained in a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday.by Marie Harf, Deputy Spokesperson of the U.S Department of State, following the Supreme Court's verdict on Ghana's landmark election dispute.

śThe United States also applauds the political parties for their commitment to nonviolence throughout the legal process, and we compliment civil society organizations and other key stakeholders for their efforts to strengthen democracy and promote peaceť, said the statement.

It indicated that the United States remained committed to working with the Government and people of Ghana, and with leaders of political parties and other civil society organizations to ensure that Ghana remains a model for democratic governance, rule of law, and stability.

The Supreme Court hearing the election petition on Thursday affirmed President John Dramani Mahama as winner of the December 2012 Presidential election.

The court by majority decision, therefore, dismissed the petition filed by Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and two others, who prayed the Court to annul the December presidential poll, citing electoral irregularities and constitutional violations.
