OKESS celebrates 75th Anniversary

Kumasi, June 20, GNA – Dr Kwabena Duffuor, Minister of Finance has observed that sport, which serves as means of entertainment, social cohesion, health promotion, and political unifying force, is also an important contributor to economic growth and development.


He said sport provide income and employment through the production and sale of sporting equipment, provision of sport-related services and infrastructure as well as the holding of sporting events.


Dr Duffuor made the observation when he interacted with newsmen after addressing a durbar to climax activities marking the 75th Anniversary, Speech and Prize-giving Day celebration of the Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) in Kumasi.


The theme for the celebration was: “Development through Academic Excellence, Sport and Discipline.”


The Finance Minister explained that sport and particularly soccer, has become a major international export commodity and marketing tool for Ghana.


He said Ghana has become synonymous with football prowess in international circles.


“Mention the name Ghana outside the country and the first thing one hears is soccer and then names of great footballers like Abedi Pele, John Mensah, Michael Essien, Sule Muntari, Asamoah Gyan and the like follow,” he noted.


Dr Duffuor said the country was known all over the world as a great sporting nation, adding:” Sport, especially soccer has lifted many individuals and their families out of poverty”.


It is against this background, the Minister emphasised, that the government is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring quality education and sport development in the country.


He said the government would intensify its efforts at ensuring quality education at all levels.
