Fire destroy buildings at European Town

Sekondi, Feb. 28, GNA - Fire gutted three storey buildings, two of them wooden structures, at European Town, a suburb of Sekondi in the Western Region, destroying properties of occupants.

The incident started around 0200 hours on Monday and it took officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) more than three hours to bring the blaze under control.

The lack of fire hydrants compelled the officers to rush to the Sekondi Naval Base, Fijai, Adiembra and Kwekuma in search of water.

Mr. Isaac Obosu, a resident of the suburb, told the GNA that the cry and shouts of people in and around the affected areas drew a large crowd to the scene.

When GNA got to the scene at about 0800 hours, some victims were trying to take their belongings from the fire amidst wailing.

The Western Regional Commander of the GNFS, Mr Stephen Oscar Cobbina, told GNA that the Service was investigating the cause of fire and that no one died but victims, who sustained minor injuries, were rushed to hospital.

He said the Volta River Authority supported the GNFS with four water tanks to quench the blaze at about 0900 hours.

Mr. Japheth Baidoo, the Western Regional Officer of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), told GNA that the Regional Disaster Management Committee, Chaired by the Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, would meet to discuss the provision of appropriate relief items for victims of the incident.

He said NADMO and the Regional Fire Officers were identifying victims for assistance.

Mr Baidoo advised the public to adhere to fire safety measures to avert fire outbreaks adding that \"We are also in the process of intensifying our education on disasters and called for attitudinal change by the general public\".

The Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Papa Owusu Ankomah, who was at the scene to sympathize with victims, said he would collaborate with relief agencies to support the victims.
