4-H Ghana calls for action to increase women in Parliament

By Edmund Quaynor, GNA

Koforidua, March 8, GNA - 4-H Ghana, a positive youth development organisation, has called on Parliament to adopt an affirmative action to ensure an increase in the number of women representation in Parliament.

This, the organisation said, would enable women to make effective inputs into the law-making process to protect women and children, especially the girlchild and the aged.

This was in a news release issued by 4-H Ghana to commemorate the International Women Day, a copy of which was made available to the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua.

4-H Ghana called on the Government to continue to pursue policies that put women “Beside” and not behind men in all endeavours.

The release reminded government and Parliament about some obnoxious and traditional practices that continues to affect women in the society.

The release mentioned some of the negative practices like Female Genital Mutilation, witch camps and trokosi, which were inimical to the wellbeing of women.

It said in recent times rape had taken a different turn with at least one case being reporting daily in the media and called for united efforts to end all such practices.

4-H Ghana believed that empowering women, especially the young women, held the key to Ghana’s socio-economic development as had happened in many developed countries, it said.

It called on well-meaning Ghanaians to incorporate gender mainstreaming in all their endeavors to enable women to contribute their quota to development.
