Sunyani, Mar. 07, GNA - Mrs. Evelyn Ama Kumi-Richardson, the Minister designate for Bono Region, has stressed the need for the protection of the environment to promote sustainable development for the benefit of particularly the generation yet unborn.
She said the preservation of the nation’s natural resources must be the prime concern of every Ghanaian at whatever level in every community.
According to her, the country could not sustainably progress if the citizenry continuously and recklessly destroyed the environment and the concomitant natural resources such as the water bodies, trees, forest and the land for development.
“We came to meet the resources and must make every good use of them to enhance national growth for today’s generation and posterity”, the Regional Minister designate advised.
Mrs. Kumi- Richardson who is the out-going Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sunyani made the call when she was reading President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s speech for Ghana’s 62nd Independence Anniversary celebration on the theme: “Celebrating Peace and Unity” on Wednesday in Sunyani.
She reiterated the President’s commitment to stop activities like ‘galamsey’ and other unsustainable ways of depleting natural resources and implored individual Ghanaians, communities and organisations to support that course for sustainable development of the nation.
The celebration was attended by 27 primary schools, 23 Junior High Schools (JHSs) and eight second cycle institutions in the Municipality.
Also present to participate in the event were beneficiaries of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo) programme, professional fashion designers association, the Sunyani Youth Development Association, cadet corps of some Senior High Schools as well as men of the Security Services.
Besides, contingents from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Prison Service, the Ghana Immigration Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority that comprised 300 troops formed a parade under the command of Captain Fui Kwasi Amable of the Three (3) Garrison.
All schools were given certificates of participation but St. James Seminary/SHS, St Vitus JHS and Susec Model Basic School were adjudged first for the SHS, JHS and primary school categories respectively in the marching.
