Canteen managers trained on clean cooking technology

Tamale, Feb. 04, GNA – School caterers, administrators and teachers have been trained in clean cooking technology to help transform their kitchens while safeguarding the health of cooks and the environment.

The training was to equip participants with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes to adopt and use clean cooking technology within their kitchens to ensure a healthier, more energy efficient and sustainable school community.

The one-day training held in Tamale was organised by the World Education Incorporated (WEI), a non-governmental organisation, with support from Clean Cooking Alliance based in Washignton DC. Participants were drawn from selected basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis, Sagnarigu and East Mamprusi Municipalities.

Madam Adwoa Etsiwaa Sey, Senior Programmes Officer of WEI, who was part of the facilitators of the training, said it was to enable participants understand the importance of adopting clean cooking in school kitchens and help others in society to adopt the technology.

Most basic schools in the country do not have kitchens and caterers who serve pupils in the schools prepare food from their homes, under poor hygienic conditions raising issues of food safety.

Basic schools that have kitchens also use traditional cookstoves such as stones that consume a lot of firewood leading to the depletion of forest as well as affecting the health of cooks as the traditional cookstoves emit a lot of smoke.

Statistics indicates that about 18,000 people die annually due to smoke related infections.  

Madam Sey, who is also the Vice Chairperson of the Ghana Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and Fuels, said clean cookstoves were efficient as they did not require a lot of firewood, and they were also not smoky thereby safeguarding the environment and health of cooks.

She was hopeful that as part of the integrated school programme for clean cooking energy, clean cooking would be integrated into the basic school curriculum for all to learn about it and adopt it adding this coupled with the cylinder recirculation would ensure that many people used clean energy.

Madam Lily-Versta Nyarko, Board Secretary of the Ghana Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and Fuels, urged participants to impart the knowledge to others to adopt clean cooking technology to save lives and environment.

Madam Lucy Anipa, a Caterer from Sagnarigu, lauded the training programme saying she would educate her colleagues to adopt clean cookstoves technology as it was good for their health and the environment.
