MOYS innuagurates technical committee for the establishment of sports Colleges

By Emmanuel Asante Attakora, GNA

Accra, Sept. 10 GNA - Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Minister for Youth and Sports (MOYS), has inaugurated a nine-member Technical Committee, to develop a working document for the establishment of three sports colleges in the Coastal, Middle and Northern belts of the country.

The colleges, are also to serve as a bridge between academia and the sports industry.

The committee, being chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, the Technical Advisor at MOYS, which would be done in collaboration with the private sector, forms part of Government’s agenda towards the fulfillment of the its manifesto, by establishing three sports colleges nationwide to curb the many challenges confronting the sports sector.

Mr Asiamah, during the inauguration noted that that the setting up of the sports colleges has become necessary owing to the fact that the country does not have a single college, that is accredited to run world class academic programs to meet the growing demands of the industry.

According to him, the National Sports College, Winneba, which was set up in 1984 has the responsibility of training and re-training the country’s human resource in the sector among others, which he believes is hugely affecting the opportunities that sports industry offer to young people, who are desirous to pursue academic programs in the sector.

He was confident that, the members of the committee would come out with expert recommendation in executing this project and charged them to expedite action on their work, adding "it is my hope that the committee's working document would be ready in two months" he said.

Dr Owusu- Ansah, on behalf of the Committee, thanked the Minister for the confidence reposed in them and assured that, the committee would work assiduously to bring this vision into fruition.

Other members of the Committee are Mr. Frank Quist, Chief Director, MOY, Prof. Reginald Ocansey, School of Education and Leadership (SEL), University of Ghana, Mr. Kwame Amponfi, National Sports Authority (NSA) and Mr. David Agorsor, Director for Policy, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation  (PPBME) at the sports Ministry.
