Youth urged to take advantage of government interventions

Oyoko (Ash), Sept. 07, GNA - Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, Ashanti Regional representative of the Council of State, has appealed to the youth to show keen interest and actively participate in the various government socio-economic initiatives to create employment for themselves.

He said the government’s rural economic interventions such as the Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, as well as the One District One Factory, were aimed at boosting agricultural production and agri-business in rural communities and to create employment opportunities.

Nana Achiaw Brempong made the call at a town hall meeting organised by the Sekyere Kumawu District assembly and the Ministry of Information at Oyoko.

The meeting was to create a platform for the local government officials and other key stakeholders to interact with the people and explain the various development projects and programmes to them.

It was also to offer opportunity to the people in the communities to raise their concerns and discuss various development challenges affecting them in the communities for solution.

The meeting brought together traditional leaders, heads of government departments and agencies, security officers, civil society organisations, development partners in the district as well as members of the public.

Nana Achiaw Brempong, who is also the chief of Akrofonso in the Sekyere South District, praised the people for showing interest and participating in the town hall meeting and said that was an indication of their interest in the speedy development of their district.

Mr Samuel Addai Agyekum, District Chief Executive, said about 102 hectares of maize and tomato farms had been planted under the planting for food and jobs in the district and the construction works on a warehouse project at Wonoo and Buffer stock project at Abena-Ato would soon commence to address the post-harvest loss challenges in the area.

Mr Agyekum said 83,000 of cashew seedlings had been distributed free of charge to farmers to plant under the planting for jobs and export programme in the district and an intravenous infusion factory would also be set up soon in the area under the one district one factory programme.

He called on the people to take advantage of the various initiatives to increase their incomes and improve on their living conditions.

Mr Philip Basoah, Member of Parliament for the area, appealed to the people in the communities to engage the local government officials to gain insights into the policies, programmes and projects which were being implemented in their communities.  

Nana Akrasi Sarpong, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Information Services Department said the essence of the town hall meetings was to promote citizens’ active participation in the governance process in their localities.

Nana Kwame Agyekum, Ankobeahene of the Oyoko traditional area commended the district assembly for creating the opportunity for the people to share their views on the development process in the district.
