Parents rush for GES placement cards in Sunyani Municipality

By Christopher Tetteh/Gloria Sarpong, GNA

Sunyani, Sept. 6, GNA - Parents whose children were not placed under the Computerised School Selection Placement System (CSSPS) in the Sunyani Municipality on Thursday besieged the premises of the Sunyani Main Post Office.

They were at the office to buy placement cards at GH¢6.00 to enable their children to gain access and do the self-placement online for the free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Some of the parents were in a state of dilemma when staff of the Ghana Post, the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) accredited vendors of the placement cards informed them of a shortage.

When the Ghana News Agency visited the Post Office around 0900 hours, some of the anxious parents, numbering about 50 were sighted in queues, whilst others were also desperately returning to their homes.

In an interview with the GNA, the parents expressed discomfort over the shortage, fearing that their children might not gain admission to SHS this academic year.

Some of them also appealed for an extension of the re-opening date to address the difficulties that had characterized the placement system.

Meanwhile, the placement cards are available at the various internet cafés which assisted the affected students to do the self- placement at a GH¢15.00 fee.

But many of the parents said they could not afford to pay the money, hence the need for the GES, to as a matter of urgency, address the concern.

That notwithstanding, some of the parents lauded the double-track system introduced by the government to address the in-take challenge confronting the free SHS programme.

Madam Joyce Awuah-Tabiri, a parent, commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the implementation of the free SHS which has lessened the economic burden of many parents.

Mr Dennis Kwame Ansu, another parent, expressed optimism that all the daunting challenges impeding the implementation of the free SHS programme would be addressed.
