EU Commission partly rejects ombudsman criticism over senior hire

Accra, Sept. 4 - (DPA/GNA) - The European Commission does "not share all aspects" of a highly critical ombudsman report into the appointment of Martin Selmayr as its top bureaucrat, says EU Human Resources Commissioner Guenther Oettinger.

The commission has a "different factual assessment" of some of the issues raised by the European Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, and does "not see any reason" for changing the future hiring process as per her recommendation, Oettinger said in a statement.

However, the commission welcomes the fact that the ombudsman is not contesting the legality of the appointment procedure nor the choice of Selmayr for the post.

Oettinger will hold talks on September 25 with the European Parliament and other EU institutions on improving the way the existing rules are implemented, he added.
