Agona East GES to probe registration of JHS ‘Two’ students in BECE

Nsaba (C/R), June 12, GNA - The Agona East District Directorate of Ghana Education Service (GES) has commenced a probe into the circumstances that led to the registration of some Junior High School (JHS) ‘2’students to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Some headteachers in some schools in the Agona East District allegedly registered 201 JHS ‘2’ students who participated in the just ended BECE.

Mrs Vida Amoah-Mintah, District Director of Education for Agona East made this known to the media at Agona Nsaba, following reports made by some administrators and proprietors of private schools after touring seven BECE centres.

The centres are; Kwanyako Senior High Technical School, Mankrong-Junction, Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO), Agona Asafo AEDA ‘A’, Namawura SHS, Nsaba Presbyterian SHS ‘A’ and Nsaba Presbyterian SHS ‘B’.

The total number of candidates who registered for the examination in the Agona East District were 2,176 for both public and private schools and they comprised 1,116 boys and 1,060 girls.

Mrs Amoah-Mintah said it was erroneous and illegitimate in the rules and regulations of GES for head of basic schools to register JHS ‘2’ students to write final year examination.

The District Director emphasised that it was unprofessional for some heads of JHSs to be induced by some parents to register their wards knowing very well that it was against the GES rules.

She said the behaviour of the reported head teachers towards the registration of the JHS ‘2’students in some private schools was tantamount to court action to the affected institutions.

Mrs Amoah-Mintah warned that any head teacher found culpable would face sanctions to serve as deterrent to others to avert future occurrence.

She said registering students prematurely affected their performance in Senior High Schools, and asked parents who used foul means to get their wards register at JHS ‘2’ to stop the act.

Mr Dennis Armah-Frempong, Agona District Chief Executive (DCE) said the Assembly would assist the District Directorate of Education to investigate the alleged registration of the JHS ‘2’ students and warned head teachers who accepted proposals from parents to register their children prematurely to curb the act or face the law.

He said the registration of lower class students in final examinations had made the Agona East District to perform poorly, adding that even though the 2017 BECE results was not encouraging no school scored zero per cent.

Mr Armah-Frempong charged the District Education Oversight Committee to take the matter up seriously to bring the schools involved to book.

He said President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s free Senior High School policy was for brilliant but poor and needy children to have access to secondary education and it was not proper for some parents and head teachers to connive and destroy the idea.
