Citizens of Effutu appeal for safe landing site

Winneba (C/R), May 15, GNA - Neenyi Ghartey VII, the Paramount Chief of Effutu Traditional Area, has appealed to the Government to construct a landing site in the area to help improve on the livelihoods of fisherfolks.

He said about 60 percent of the citizens in Effutu earned a living from fishing and the construction of a modern landing site would reduce the incidence of fishing equipment being destroyed as a result of tides in the area.

Neenyi Ghartey VII made the appeal at a durbar to climax the 2018 Aboakyer Festival at Winneba.

He said: “As a matter of urgency we are respectfully calling on President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to come to our aid to construct a modern safe landing facility in Winneba for us.”

He said the Aboakyer festival was perhaps one of the most marketable festivals in Ghana, which the government should invest in.

“We were glad when we received the news that plans are far advanced by the Tourism Authorities to develop a Winneba Beach Resort, and also to help us preserve our sacred forest, from which we catch our Deer. We are confident the said project will be executed as planned”.

The process of hunting for deer, Neenyi Ghartey VII noted, needed adequate preparation, sacrifice, unity of purpose, perseverance, persistence and determination, and recommended these qualities to the entire people of Ghana.

We shall need these qualities as the nation moves beyond aid, and the transformation of the country will not be materialized, “unless we sacrifice and unite; and we would celebrate our success just as the victorious Asafo companies does,” he said.

Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament of Effutu Constituency, in his goodwill message commended the chiefs and people of the area for a successful and peaceful festival.

He said Aboakyer was not just an ordinary festival, but one in which the men of the community displayed courage and commitment to the stool.

“One in which teamwork and perseverance is the objective for a successful hunt for a live deer to be presented to the paramount chief for the ceremony of propitiating the deity.

“We encourage you and we want your endeavours to prove fruitful. As our forefathers bequeathed this rare tradition to us, we would also preserve its fineness for the next generation,” he added.

Mr. John B. Ninson, the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive on his part, congratulated the chiefs and people for showcasing their rich culture and tradition through the festival, adding “let us also be mindful that it should also be the foundation of a strong society towards promoting peace, harmony and understanding between our people.

“Let us utilize the festival to its fullness, by being compassionate, seek unity as we portray, and preserve our culture and tradition, he stated.
