PUWU Commissions Ultra-modern Conference and Hospitality Centre

By Amadu Kamil Sanah, GNA

Kasoa (C/R), May. 14, GNA - The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has commissioned a modern ultra-modern Conference and Hospitality Centre at Kasoa in the Central Region.

The three-storey state-of-the-art facility has 70 self-contained rooms, two conference facilities, restaurant and training gym.

It is constructed and supervised by EL-Kenros Ventures Consult, a building and construction consultants.

Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in address, said recent happenings on the industrial relations scene had caused loss of jobs in certain sectors of the country’s economy and assured them of government commitment to create jobs.

He said this had triggered calls from sections of Organised Labour for reforms and modernity into union activities and their funding.

Mr Baffour Awuah said trade unions had become knowledge based in our contemporary times and therefore behoved on leadership of various unions in the labour fraternity to get extra creative ideas to avert the traditional course of over-reliance on dues as the only significant source of revenue to run union activities.

He said the edifice bore testimony to the foresight and considerable hard work of the leadership of PUWU to diversify its sources of revenue to fund the union’s activities.

The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, said relying solely on dues had been found to be inadequate and that this realisation had encouraged unions all over the world to invest in businesses to generate extra income.

He said unions that relied on dues as the only source of revenue were experiencing worrying signs of financial crises and commended the PUWU leadership and members for the achievement.

He expressed the hoped that it would encourage PUWU to resolve to undertake more projects for the benefit of its members.

Dr Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), said it was overwhelming to see the edifice and that it was always in the minds of people that unions of the TUC were doing nothing to better the lives of their members but only strikes.

He said PUWU was one of the major pillars of the TUC, adding that, nothing could be done in the country without the dependency on Electricity and Water.

Dr Baah advised PUWU to keep an eye on the management of the facility, adding that, “this facility is the home of all unions under the TUC and meeting should held here to indicate that it really belongs to us.”

Mr Michael A. Nyantakyi, PUWU General Secretary, said the executives played a major role in contributing to the progress of PUWU and called on members to support the executive to execute their duties.
