IGP visits Alavanyo and Nkonya

By Samuel Akumatey, GNA

Nkonya (V/R) Jan. 13, GNA - The Inspector General of Police, Mr David Asante- Apeatu,   has paid a working visit to the Nkonya and Alavanyo Traditional areas in the Volta region.

The visit, which included the peace keeping regiment and site for a security base on the buffer zone between the two areas was to afford the IGP the opportunity to familiarise himself with the security of the area.

He expressed worry about the unending nature of the almost a century old land dispute between the areas said the changing times demanded that the Police Service re-strategized on maintaining law and order in the two towns.

He appealed to the youth to respect the mandate of the security personnel and asked that they took up their roles in the peace process.

Nana Tsedze Atakora VII, Paramount Chief of Alavanyo appealed to Government to guide the process by the 2004 Dr Livingston Boamah Committee report, work on which had been abandoned since 2009.

He said the Committee made significant efforts and that trees and stones bearing boundary markings were discovered, and a composite map subsequently drawn.

Nana Atakora asked government not to rest the burden of the peace process on the traditional areas alone, and welcomed the police’s efforts at increasing its effectiveness in the troubled zones.

He appealed for a police station in Alavanyo, saying since the last was decommissioned during the colonial times, fighting crime had been without a local charge office and a holding cell, and added that land had long been availed for the project

Madam Comfort Attah, the District Chief Executive of Biakoye said leaders of Nkonya agreed to cancel last year’s Sankyiba festival following an alleged kidnapping incidence and had recently suggested the engagement of an independent prosecutor.

She said personnel of security services, though inadequate had been supportive and asked the IGP for more personnel and logistics, particularly vehicles and accommodation.
