Elite clubs renew old rivalry at 'GHALCA G8 Tournament'

By Stephen Asante, GNA

Kumasi, Dec. 22, GNA - The Ghana League Clubs' Association (GHALCA) has launched the ‘G8 Tournament’ at a ceremony in Kumasi.

The launch sets the tone for some crunching fixtures, which would likely see the top most clubs in the country renew old rivalry.

The competition, slated for January 6-21, next year, is to prepare the participating teams for the 2017/18 season.

On hand to provide the needed sponsorship packages include Star Times, a broadcasting company, and other supporting pharmaceutical and alcoholic beverage manufacturing companies.

Two-time African champions, Asante Kotoko S/C are billed to play Aduana Stars, Ghana’s Premier League champions, as well as Eleven Stars and Dreams F/C, all at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, while Accra Hearts of Oak lock horns with Medeama F/C, Ebusua Dwarfs and Karela F/C at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The eventual winner takes home an amount of GH¢35, 000 and a trophy, while each club would be paid 20, 000 Ghana Cedis as participation fee.

“We are convinced that the tournament will help bring out the best in the participating teams for the task ahead next season, especially those who will be going to Africa”, Mr. Cudjoe Fianoe, the GHALCA Chairman, told the GNA Sports on the sidelines of the programme.

He indicated that the competition would be played in a league format, and that, the two top teams in each group would then be paired against each other for the semi-final stage, while the winners advance to the grand finale.

He said the leadership of the Association was poised to exploring avenues to improve their financial status, noting that this was being done through effective partnership with stakeholders.

“GHALCA is working around the clock to bring on board interested companies to sponsor our programmes, and future tournaments are expected to be even more exciting”, he observed.

Mr. Fianoe, touching on officiating, said organizers of the tournament were working assiduously to ensure that officiating met the required standards.

“For the purposes of this tournament, the organizers are liaising with the Referees’ Appointment Committee to ensure that those shortlisted and selected to handle the matches are fair and firm to avoid controversies on the field of play”, he assured.

The GHALCA Chairman appealed to the media to give the necessary publicity to the competition in order to whip up awareness and interest amongst football fans.

Mr. Osei Tutu Agyemang, Ashanti Regional Football Association Chairman, hoped the tournament would provide the needed platform for the teams to get in shape ahead of next season’s league.

Alhaji Braimah Akanbi, a Board Member, represented Hearts of Oak, at the programme, and Aduana Stars was also represented by Mr. Isaac Coomson, with all the other clubs being also duly represented.
