Accra, Oct. 11, GNA - Accra Hearts of Oak are demanding a “competent” referee in their MTN FA Cup final match with arch rivals Asante Kotoko at the Tamale Sports Stadium on Sunday October 29.
The record winners of the FA Cup competition insists they have been treated unfairly by referees in recent matches against Asante Kotoko, with particular reference to premier league match day 25 in Kumasi as well the 2017 President’s cup.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the club, Kwame Opare Addo, who made the call during an interview with GNA after the MTN FA Cup mascot unveiling ceremony said they don’t fear their opponents but only fear that they may be cheated.
“Once again it is the same thing that we are also calling for, fairness. There should not be any reason why anybody refereeing should not be fair, once there is fairness Hearts of Oak would return with the cup this year, we do not have fear for any opponent,” Opare Addo said.
He added that they would only be ready for the match if assured of a competent referee by the Referees’ Appointment Committee.
“If the committee brings any referee who is competent enough we are ready for the match.”
“Yes because there are competent ones here, it is only Hearts of Oak, who suffer anytime we play our opponents, but we know how to withstand it and we are going to stand firm on that day.”
Aside the bragging right, the cup winner will represent Ghana in next year’s Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederation Cup plus cash price of GH¢150,000.00.
Hearts and Kotoko last met in the final in 1990, when the Phobians lost by 4-2. The Phobians, however have not won the trophy in 17 years, their last time was in 2000.
This year’s MTN FA Cup final, which has the tagline ‘the unmissable’ also has for the first time in the competition’s history an official mascot called Mr Obia Nye Obia as its brand symbol.
