Assembly to wage war against teenage pregnancy

Awutu-Beraku (C/R), July 30, GNA - Members of the Awutu Senya District Assembly have been charged to wage relentless war against teenage pregnancy to protect the well-being of school girls.

Mr Sampson Abbey-Armah, the District Chief Executive, tasked the members at the third session of the Assembly at Awutu-Beraku in the Central Region.

He noted that the issue of teenage pregnancy involving school girls below 18 years is becoming unbearable in the area and should not be tolerated.

Mr Abbey-Armah expressed regret that seven final year junior high school candidates in the district could not take part in this year’s recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He urged the assembly members to attach great importance to the issue and initiate programmes with their community leaders to educate the young girls in their electoral areas on the problems of teenage pregnancy.

He warned parents and guardians who encourage their young girls into early marriages to put a stop to such negative practices, adding that such acts infringe on the country’s laws and could attract severe punishment.

Mr Abbey-Armah lauded the West Africa Examination Council for the decent manner with which it conducted this year’s BECE examinations and urged it to keep it on.
