Kumasi, June 05, GNA – Dr Evans Aggrey Darko, Chief Director of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MoPA), has stressed the need for strong and visionary leadership at the various levels of governance to speed up the country’s development agenda.
He said nurturing of strong visionary leaders at the national, regional and district levels, coupled with good governance backed by high quality public service, would transform Ghana into a modern entrepreneurial nation state.
Dr Darko made the call in Kumasi at the opening of a-three day workshop for Members of Parliament (MP) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’s) drawn from the Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo and Western Regions.
The workshop, which was under the theme, “enhancing leadership for good governance”, was aimed at highlighting the vital role leadership and governance played in a nation’s transformation process.
Topics discussed included the core tenets of leadership, examine the state of Ghana’s local government, deliberate on ways to improve upon the performance of MP’s and MMDCE’s and also harmonize their relationships.
Dr. Aggrey Darko said the Ministry was working tirelessly to improve not just the skills and knowledge of MPs and MMDCEs, but also, the relationship between them to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in governance and promote equity for economic development and poverty reduction.
Additionally, the Ministry was working to deepen both administrative and political decentralization at all levels.
He said education and capacity building must necessarily be a life-long experience so as to sharpen skills and knowledge of the people to be good citizens and improve upon the quality of public goods and service delivery.
Dr. Darko pledged the support of the Ministry to assist the local government system to mobilize and manage resources to deliver services to local communities in a manner that was responsive and accountable to the people.
