Ho, Feb. 15, GNA - Security has been put on
high alert in the Krachi West District ahead of President Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo Addo’s declaration of regional capital for the proposed Oti Region on
Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that some youth in the District had threatened violence should the capital be granted Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality and not Kete Krachi in the West.
Sources close to the Police said the youth in Kete Krachi allegedly threatened to burn down an estate in the area, which belonged to Mr Michael Gyato, Member of Parliament for Krachi East, who hailed from Kete Krachi.
The youth allegedly said the capital going to Dambai would mean the MP had betrayed his own people in the interest of his political ambitions.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Samuel Nkrumah, Krachi West Divisional Police Commander who spoke to the GNA said the Command was on high alert to avert any clashes before and after the declaration.
On Monday, about 115 acres of mango plantation in Dambai belonging to Mr Gyato was burnt and GNA was told that another farm in the Krachi West District belonging to a family member of the MP was also burnt.
Mr Gyato recently called on the people to accept which ever District the President declared as capital of the region, saying the location was not important, and that all that mattered was the development of the enclave.
Checks by the GNA in the Jasikan District indicated that security had been stepped up in that area too.
Meanwhile the entire Oti enclave remains calm as residents await the presentation of the Constitutional Instrument for the creation of the region.
