Zuarungu (U/E) Aug. 9, GNA – Mr Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on aspirants vying for various positions to peacefully co-exist to reclaim power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2020.
He said “our target is NPP, our target is victory 2020 and not internal victories, we must bring everybody on board and ensure that we put counter policies against NPP, and do diligent analysis of their promises, whether they have been able to fulfil them or not.”
He said the regional executive election was an internal affair, and urged candidates to campaign decently and extend respect to one another, adding that they needed one another to canvass votes for the NDC in the 2020 general election.
Mr Atanga who is seeking re-election, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Zuarungu that “It is an internal affair, it is just about who will steer for the others to support, and so you cannot undermine the support base, because you alone cannot move.”
According to him, the people of the region did not see the NPP as a party that could liberate them, and said that accounted for why the NPP could not match the NDC in the region, adding that “when they took power in 2000, they should have been neck to neck with us but they are not because that party is not a party that is in bed with the people of this region.”
He said the leadership of the NPP could not much them in the region because the NDC had already “picked people who have the know-how in politics, it is not about going to radio stations to abuse people, it is about working on the ground, your social relationships,” he said.
Mr Atanga said the NDC was endowed with experienced executives who could go down to the grassroots and convince the electorates in the region to make sure the NDC regained power in 2020, and emphasised that “we do not have any fear whether NPP has new executives or old executives, one of their legs is out.”
Mr Atanga who has occupied the position of Regional Secretary from 1998, is contesting Mr Thomas Abiola and ppealed to party delegates to cast their votes in his favour to retain him because he had accumulated the needed experience to lead the party to victory in 2020.
