Asiwa (Ash), Sept. 04, GNA – The Electoral Commission (EC) has started the process of creating 11 new electoral areas in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region.
The exercise is expected to increase the total number of electoral areas in the District to 32 from the current 21.
Stakeholders in the proposed areas have already endorsed the move at a forum held at Asiwa to solicit their views to avoid future resistance.
The forum, organised by the district office of the EC was attended by assembly members, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, political party representatives, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and Information Services Department (ISD).
It also sought to agree on the names and boundaries of the new electoral areas – a critical aspect of the exercise which most often generated debate among the citizenry in the affected areas.
Mrs. Grace Martha Navele, the District Electoral Officer, said although the EC was responsible for the creation of electoral areas, it could not embark on the exercise without consulting stakeholders.
She said the proposed electoral areas would ensure proximity of polling stations and eliminate situations where some voters in remote areas trekked long distances to cast their votes.
The inputs of stakeholders, she said, were critical to the electoral process, adding that the EC would continue to engage them to ensure free, fair and credible elections at all times.GNA
