Accra, Feb. 28, GNA - Mr Joseph Owusu, the Programmes Officer of the National Association of Local Authorities (NALAG), on Wednesday called on assembly members and district chief executives (DCEs) to upgrade their skills through training.
Mr Owusu said assembly members and DCEs needed the required skills, knowledge, understanding, and experience in their area of work so as to work effectively.
"Assembly members developing themselves effectively through training will make them responsible and be abreast of their duties in their various assemblies," he said.
Mr Owusu said this at a day’s sensitisation workshop, organised for local governance activists in Accra, and called for citizen participation that would help make leaders accountable and improve governance.
This, he said, would help leaders at the assemblies to understand the actual issues confronting the citizens and address them accordingly.
"There is the need for effective interaction, timely town hall meetings, rules that embrace, as well as facilitate the participation of citizens," he said.
Going into the future, Mr Owusu noted that NALAG would be developing training programmes for the various assemblies where it would enhance their abilities and develop other potentials to bring about employment in the localities.
Mr Kwame Edem Senanu, a Management and Development Consultant with Alpha Primus Limited, urged assembly members to build allies within their communities for support to close the information gaps hindering development.
He called for adequate citizen participation in the country's governance system, especially when participation of people in governance was at the lowest in the history of Ghana's democracy.
Mr Senanu called on Civil Society Organizations and other bodies to put pressure on Parliament to make assembly members accountable.
The day's event, dubbed: "National Popular Participation Policy Framework Sensitisation Workshop," brought together more than 50 presiding members to learn, share, engage and discuss measures that would help improve citizen's participation for accelerated national development.
Among the municipal assemblies that participated were the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Ada East and West Metropolitan Assemblies, Ashiaman and the Ga East and South Metropolitan Assemblies.
Others were Kpone Katamanso, Ladekotopong, Lankwantanang, Ningo Prampram, Shai Osudoku and Atiwa East and West Municipal Assemblies respectively.
