Accra, April 15, GNA - Mrs Pearl Asomaning Kemajou, a former University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council Secretary has denounced government’s introduction of the Public Universities Bill for passage.
She said the introduction of the Bill in addition to other unpopular ones could derail his chances and therefore predicted a win for former President Mahama in the 2020 elections.
“It is unbelievable, these two years that Akufo-Addo has been President, things have been too difficult. There is just no money in the system, and many now struggle to put food on the table.” Mrs Kemajou said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
Mrs Kemajou who is also a Social Activist said amidst the hardships, government had floundered Economic data that did not give the facts on the ground. “For instance, how can all the macroeconomic indicators be good and yet there are so much hardships?”
According to her, Ghanaians had regretted the mistake they made in 2016 and were poised to bring John Mahama back to power in 2020. “Akufo-Addo should forget 2020; As for the floating voters, none will repeat the mistake of 2016.
The Bill seeks to widen the Government’s power and control on the Universities by whittling down the number of non-Government appointees on the University Councils and increase that of the Government.
Most major stakeholders have since kicked against the Bill, which also seeks to rename the Universities after Statesmen.
“We have had many previous Presidents before Akufo-Addo and none of them threatened academic freedom like this President. What is Government’s business trying to dominate Universities? since when did academia and politics begin mixing in this country?”
“The President should know that this University Council bill has already failed because we don’t want Government dominance of our Universities. He should just look at how Rawlings rejected the proposition to name UDS after him and see the truth for himself.”
She said the President’s Free SHS programme, was not gelling because of poor implementation and had become a source of hardship for SHS students who were now arranged and Gold, Green pattern.
