Sunyani, Jan. 10, GNA - A 27-year-old suspected armed robber, Bukari Sumaila, is in Police custody after an attempt to rob passengers on the Kintampo-Tamale road.
Sumaila who was knocked down by a vehicle in the process confessed to the Police that he was among a gang of armed robbers who travelled from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region to some parts of Brong-Ahafo and Northern Region on a robbery mission in December last year.
The Kintampo Police arrested the alleged robber in the bush and took him to the Kintampo Municipal Government Hospital for treatment and thereafter detained him at the Kintampo Police Station to assist in investigation.
Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer told Journalists Sunyani on Thursday.
He said Sumalia was hit by the vehicle in the course of robbery operation but his accomplices left him to his fate in the bush, explaining at about 1630 hours on that day, Alhassan Haruna, a 38-year-old driver reported of the incident to the Kintampo Police.
Chief Inspector Oppong said Haruna was driving a Sprinter Benz bus with registration number AW5400-14 with passengers on board from Buipe, Northern Region to Offinso in the Ashanti Region, saying on reaching a section of the road between Babato and Kintampo two suspected armed men emerged from the bush with SB short guns.
He said one of the robbers shot at the vehicle but the driver refused to stop, adding that the other accomplice threw a big stone to smash one of the side glasses of the vehicle and injured three of the passengers on board.
Chief Inspector Oppong said the injured passengers - Madam Boatemaa, Ms Mariama, and Alhassan Abiba, were rushed to the Kintampo Municipal Government Hospital where two of them were treated and discharged but Boatemaa was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.
He said Police went to the scene and in a search found Sumaila in the bush with wounds on his right leg.
