Accra, Jan. 16, GNA – A 19-year old, unemployed, Nii Quaye Tawiah, on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with robbery.
Nii Quaye, according to the police, robbed one Dorcas Berko, of her Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile phone and a hand bag containing an amount of GH¢ 50.00, a phone charger and a dress, at Dome Pillar ‘2’.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge before the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh and was remanded to reappear on January 29.
Police Chief Inspector William Boateng, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant Dorcas work with a treated water company as a factory hand whilst the accused is unemployed and both live at Dome in Accra.
He said on April 23, 2018 at about 0500 hours, the complainant was walking along a street at Dome to work when she realised that the accused was tailing her.
He said she became scared and therefore doubled her steps however the accused quickened his pace and caught up with her and suddenly crossed to the complainant, pulled out a knife and threatened her to surrender her phone and hang bag.
The prosecution said the complainant with fear handed over her Samsung Galaxy S8 phone to the accused but decided not to hand over the bag and seeing a lady sweeping in a nearby house decided to run to her for rescue.
He told the court that Nii Quaye held the hang bag during which the complainant fell down, he then beat her up and succeeded in snatching the bag which contained cash in the sum of GH¢50.00, the phone charger and the dress.
Chief Inspector Boateng said the lady who was sweeping nearby spotted the incident and raised an alarm for assistance, and her shouts attracted people to the scene who gave the accused a chase.
He said he was arrested at a distance with all the exhibits together with his knife and was handed over to Police where the victim lodged a formal complaint.
The prosecution said Nii Quaye admitted the offence in his caution statement.
