Koforidua (E/R), July 3, GNA - The Koforidua
Regional Hospital collected over 81 units of blood at the end of this year’s
Republic Day blood donation campaign.
Dr Cardinal Newton, the Clinical Director of the Hospital, said the hospital instituted the campaign to annually mobilize it’s own staff and the public to donate blood to help save lives.
He said this year, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) decided to collaborate with the hospital to organize the campaign.
Dr Newton said there is the need for Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of voluntary blood donation to help the country avoid blood shortages.
He said if the country had 60 per cent of the adult population donating blood regularly the country would not run short of blood and there would not be the need for the existing policy that relations of people who are given blood should replace it.
On behalf of the management of the Regional Hospital and NHIA, Dr Newton thanked all who participated in the programme and donated blood.
As part of the programme, the NHIA registered new applicants and those with expired cards.
