Esuoso (W/R), Nov. 9, GNA - Manganese Ladies Association (MLA), has extended its annual breast cancer screening exercise to Esuoso community in the Tarkwa Nsueam Constituency.
In all 350 people were screened, out of which 320 were women as against 20 men.
During the exercise, 20 suspected cases of breast cancer were recorded and the people referred to the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) Hospital at Nsuta Wassa for further examination.
Mrs Cynthia Tetteh, the General Secretary of the Association, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said even though they projected to screen 200 women, the figure increased and she described it ‘as encouraging’.
She stated that as breast cancer was one of the leading causes of death in the country, the Manganese Ladies Association was formed in 2013 to create awareness of the disease in its host communities.
She said so far 1,200 women from Bonsawire, Tamso, Nsuta, Kwamenakrom, Tarkwa Banso, Akyem, Bankyim, Eyinasei, Domeabra and Teacherkrom have benefited from the programme, which was sponsored by GMC.
Twenty six cases have been reported from the ten communities and the women were going through further treatment, she added.
Miss Ellen Aboagy, a nurse at the Tarkwa Municipal Health Directorate, advised Ghanaians not to associate breast cancer to spitualities.
She entreated women and men to seek immediate medical care anytime they detected lumps in their breast, bloody discharge from their nipples, redness and changes in the shape of the nipple of the breast.
