Odumase (B/A), Dec. 4, GNA – Five people, comprising three females and two males tested HIV positive, as Brong-Ahafo Region joined the globe to celebrate the 2018 World AIDS Day on Saturday.
They were among 311 people who went through voluntarily HIV/AIDS counselling and testing at a health screening exercise to mark the regional celebration at Odumase in the Sunyani West District.
It was organized by the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC).
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator of the GAC, said the patients have been referred and would be put on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART).
He said once patients are placed on ART it would suppress the virus and that could control spread and reduce new infections.
Mr Bambilla said HIV/AIDS testing and counselling as well as ART services were conducted free of charge and advised the public to check and know their status.
He said it is better for people to know their status because those who were put on ART and strictly adhered to taking their drugs could live longer.
Mr Bambilla said HIV/AIDS is real, fast-spreading in the Sunyani Municipality, and advised adolescent people to stay away from unprotected sex and multiple sex partners.
