Wa, Feb. 6, GNA - MTN Ghana has supplied 140 pieces of science sets to Wa Municipal Model Junior High School (JHS) as part of its effort to improve the teaching and learning of science practicals in basic schools.
The items are expected to aid the students perform basic science experiments in electronics as well as revive their creativity and innovative thinking capacities for national development.
Mr Obed Adu Amankwa, MTN Upper West Territory Sales Controller, who made the presentation on Tuesday, said the donation, which was made in collaboration with Dext Technology, sought to inspire the practical learning of science and technology in schools.
“The idea is to encourage the practicality of the teaching and learning of science and revive innovation and creativity of science in students,” he said, “We in MTN believe in technology, in transforming the lives of people”.
Mr Amankwa said the distribution was ongoing nationwide in selected schools, and that the telecom giant would scale up supply to other schools but that would depend on how effective and efficient current beneficiaries use the tools to improve practical science education.
He urged science teachers to handle the tools to improve the knowledge and skills of the students and help make an impact on society.
Mr Mumuni Abass Sidik, the Kabanye Circuit Supervisor, who received the science kits on behalf of the school, said: “We want to assure you that our students are going to make good use of the sets”.
He described the school’s enrolment hovering around 850 students as a “Chinese population” with limited infrastructure and furniture which has led to overcrowding in classrooms.
He appealed to stakeholders in education to support the JHS established in 2001 overcome its widening infrastructure deficit in order to improve the standard of teaching and learning.
Mr Caleb Fugah, the Marketing Officer of Dext Technology, expressed the hope that the science supplies would help schools address the challenge of lack of access to laboratories and ease the cost of maintaining the existing few.
He described the technology as affordable and simple to use which would go a long way to demystify the learning of science as a difficult subject and whip up interests of students in it.
The students were taken through a demonstration teaching and lesson session on the circuit conductor.
