Kumasi, Feb. 3, GNA - Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, and the Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology (KNUST), has asked the Government to take the necessary steps to complete infrastructural projects at the University.
“I am happy government is mobilising funds through the Ghana Educational Trust (GET) Fund to support infrastructural works on various campuses,” he said.
“KNUST, being the premier science and technology university in the country, must have its fair share of the resources,” he told a special congregation ceremony of the University at the Great Hall, Kumasi.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu said the ‘KNUST Teaching and Research Hospital’ project, which commenced in 2008 had stalled for over a decade due to financial constraints.
“This concern has been mentioned in several of my previous addresses to this august gathering and I want to reiterate once again, for government to complete the project,” he noted.
The Chancellor observed that the increasing number of student applicants had brought its attendant burden on the University authorities in relation to the expansion of infrastructure.
Currently, the university has over 50,000 student population.
“The potential increase in enrolment at the tertiary level would require corresponding increase in resources, both financial and human, to be able to cope with the expected increase in student numbers,” Otumfuo Osei-Tutu stated.
“The time to double our steps in fashioning a response is now.”
He said it was imperative that the University was assisted to meeting its mandate for cutting-edge research and innovations that helped to address development needs of the Ghanaian society.
The Chancellor lauded the graduands for having successfully completed their academic programmes.
He entreated them to resolve to bring their expertise to bear in all fields of human endeavour for the wellbeing of the people.
This year’s ceremony 3,729 graduates, made up of 1,268 undergraduates and 2,461 post-graduates from all the six colleges being awarded certificates.
