Akwaatia (Ash), Feb. 21, GNA – The Asante-Akim South Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region is supporting Akwaatia, a farming community in that District to construct a classroom block.

This community hitherto had no school and many children were left stranded or trek a round trip of eight kilometers daily to the nearest school at Kumeso.

To address the problem, the community has initiated a series of fund-raising activities for the past two years, in aid of the construction of a school block.

Spearheaded by the Dumankwaahene of the Obogu Traditional Area, who is also the caretaker of the community; financial resources accruing from the fund-raising events, would also be used to cater for the other educational needs of the children at the pre-school level.

This would help prepare them adequately to enter the basic school.

Speaking at one of the fundraising programmes held at Akwaatia, Mr Alexander Frimpong, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the provision of the school is part of a comprehensive development agenda which the Assembly is pursuing.

“This seeks to ensure that every community would have its fair share of the resources available to the Assembly, no community would be left out of this agenda,” he said.

The MCE applauded the community for the initiative which, he said, demonstrated their quest for development and pledged the Assembly’s support for the project.

He said investing in the education is the surest way to build the human resource base of the country and gave the assurance that the Assembly would liaise with the Municipal Education Directorate to provide the needed support to the community.

Mr Frimpong donated 20 bags of cement towards the project and promised more support by the Assembly.

Nana Frimpong Fenteng said the establishment of a school in the community was a top priority of the people considering the stress that their children had to go through daily to access education.

He commended the MCE for supporting the initiative and called on other stakeholders to contribute their quota in the interest of the kids.
