Ho, Sept. 13, GNA - The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) on Thursday took custody of 88 bicycles for distribution among its paid interns and Community Education Teaching Assistants in difficult areas.
The bicycles were provided by Better Ghana Services under its private-public partnership arrangement with the NYEP, Mr Gunadish Nyavie Volta Region Co-ordinator said at the handing over ceremony in Ho.
He explained that the bicycles were not meant for all the Interns and Teaching Assistants but those in communities where transportation is a difficulty.
Mr Nyavie commended the level of commitment among NYEP Interns, Teaching Assistants and NYEP Co-ordinators in the Volta Region.
Ms Jessie Ekumebu, Volta Regional Co-ordinator of the NYEP said the bicycles have come in handy to help the beneficiaries to be punctual to work, overcome the tedium of having to walk long distances to their workplaces and check laziness and absenteeism.
Some of the beneficiaries told the Ghana News Agency that the package was commendable as it would help overcome their transportation difficulties and improve their effectiveness.
They however observed that it would be difficult for women to ride the bicycles because they were designed for men.
They said motor-cycles would have served them better given the rugged nature of the terrain and long distances they have to traverse with the bicycles.
They suggested that in future motor-cycles should be considered even if they would have to pay for them.
